DocSend vs Papermark for decks and data rooms

Reviewed

Short answer: DocSend for a single investor or founder who wants page-level analytics and access revocation from $10 a month; Papermark for a free plan that does real work, or for NDA-gated, watermarked data rooms at a lower price than DocSend's Advanced plans.

Both share documents as tracked links with page-by-page analytics, passwords, expiry dates, and download controls, and both run data rooms. The difference is where the stricter controls start: DocSend puts email verification, NDAs, and watermarks on Advanced at $150 a month, while Papermark puts email verification on Business at $69 and NDAs and watermarks on Data Rooms at $119.

Verdict

DocSend, which holds the Document Analytics slot in our Investor Stack. Personal, at $10 per user per month on annual billing, covers page-level analytics, access revocation, and unlimited visitors, and Standard adds unlimited data rooms. Seed to Series B startups can get up to 90% off for a year through DocSend's VC and accelerator partners. Pick Papermark if you need a free plan you can use with outside readers, or gated data rooms on a smaller budget.

What each costs

For one person, DocSend is cheaper: Personal is $10 per user per month on annual billing, against $29 for Papermark Pro. For a team that needs gated sharing, Papermark is cheaper: email verification starts on Business at $69 a month with 3 team members, and NDAs and watermarks on Data Rooms at $119, where DocSend puts all three on Advanced at $150 a month with 3 users.

Both quote yearly billing by default. DocSend's monthly prices are $15, $65, $250, and $300; Papermark says yearly billing saves up to 35%.

Free plans

Papermark's free plan is usable with outside readers: 50 links, 50 documents, unlimited visitors, and page-by-page analytics kept for 30 days. DocSend has no free plan as such: after its 14-day trial, an account drops to a limited trial with 10 links and 5 documents, shows only two visits per document, and adds a DocSend signup page to the end of each document.

Controls for confidential documents

Both offer passwords, expiry dates, and download controls on every plan. DocSend lets you revoke access to a document on every plan. Email verification, NDAs, and dynamic watermarks sit on DocSend's Advanced plans; on Papermark, email verification starts at Business and NDAs and watermarks need the Data Rooms plan.

Both stamp watermarks with the viewer's email address, IP address, and the date and time.

Papermark's open-source code

Papermark's code is public: the core is licensed under AGPLv3 and its enterprise features, including data rooms, under a commercial licence. Papermark says self-hosting is for personal, non-commercial use without data rooms or advanced security, and lists commercial self-hosting from $500 a month. Its hosted service runs in Europe by default.
