Mercury vs Ramp for startups

Reviewed

Short answer: Mercury for a startup's first and primary account; Ramp once spend control across a team is the job, and the company already holds $25,000 or more in a US business bank account.

Mercury is built around the bank account and adds cards, bill pay, and expense tools on top. Ramp is built around corporate cards and spend management, and now offers its own checking account. Neither is a bank: both work through partner banks. Ramp lists Mercury among the banks it connects to, so many teams run both.

Verdict

Mercury, which holds the Capital & Banking slot in our Founder Stack. Its free plan has no monthly fees or minimum balance, sends ACH, domestic wires, and USD international wires for $0, and its IO card has no personal guarantee and pays 1.5% cashback. A company can open it on day one. Pick Ramp when card policies, approvals, and receipt collection across a growing team matter more than the account, and you meet its $25,000 cash requirement.

A bank account or a spend platform

Mercury is where a startup keeps its money: the free plan has no monthly fees or minimum balance, and adds employee cards, receipt matching, reimbursements, and bill pay. Ramp starts from the other end, with corporate cards, expense policies, and approvals, and has added a checking account at First Internet Bank of Indiana.

Ramp lists Mercury among the banks it connects to, so a company can keep Mercury as its primary account and run card spend through Ramp.

Who can open each

Mercury accepts companies formed and registered in the US or a US territory, and founders don't need to be US citizens or residents. Most US businesses qualify for its IO card on their first day; the card is cash-underwritten, so the balance can't exceed what the company holds at Mercury.

Ramp asks for a US-registered corporation, LLC, or LP with at least $25,000 in cash in a US business bank account linked to the application. Neither accepts sole proprietorships.

What each costs

Both have a free plan that covers most early-stage needs. Mercury's paid plans are priced per company: Plus is $35 a month or $29.90 billed annually, and Pro $350 or $299. Ramp Plus is $15 per user per month plus a platform fee based on team size that Ramp doesn't publish, with 20% off for annual billing.

On payments, Mercury charges $0 for ACH, domestic wires, and USD international wires on every plan. Ramp's Bill Pay is free when you pay from a Ramp Checking Account; from an external bank it charges $0.59 per ACH payment, $15 per domestic wire, and $20 per international USD wire.
