Supabase for startups: why it's our backend
Founder Stack · Slot 02 of 5 · Backend Infrastructure · Reviewed
Short answer: Supabase, for most startup backends: standard Postgres with auth, storage, and functions, a free plan for prototypes, and Pro from $25 a month with a spend cap on by default.
Stop managing server instances before product-market fit. Postgres-native, open-source infrastructure that scales from weekend prototype to Series A without refactoring.

Why Supabase holds the slot
Before product-market fit, a backend should cost little and lock in nothing. Supabase gives each project a Postgres database with auth, storage, and functions, so a small team writes SQL instead of running servers.
Because the database is standard Postgres, it leaves with pg_dump and restore, and Supabase itself can be self-hosted with Docker. That exit is why it holds the slot over Firebase.
What it costs a startup
Free gives 2 active projects, each with a 500 MB database, 50,000 monthly active users, 1 GB of file storage, and 5 GB of egress. Free projects pause after a week of inactivity.
Pro starts at $25 a month for the first project, with $10 of compute credits that cover one Micro instance; more projects start at $10 a month. Pro includes 8 GB of disk per project, 100,000 monthly active users, 100 GB of storage, and 250 GB of egress, then charges $0.125 per GB of disk, $0.00325 per MAU, $0.0213 per GB of storage, and $0.09 per GB of egress. The spend cap is on by default, so usage beyond the quota needs you to switch it off.
SSO, backup controls, and industry certifications start on Team, from $599 a month.
Where Supabase falls short
Supabase fits most startup products. It is the wrong fit when:
- The project must stay up without traffic on the free plan: free projects pause after a week of inactivity.
- You're building an offline-first mobile app. Firestore persists data offline by default on Android and Apple.
- You need SSO on the dashboard but can't justify $599 a month.
- You expect pg_dump to move everything. It moves the database; auth, storage, and functions need their own migration plan.
What would cost Supabase the slot
Supabase holds the slot because it is plain Postgres with a free start and a capped bill. If the database stopped being something you can dump and restore elsewhere, the spend cap stopped being the default, or the free plan stopped working for a prototype, we would reopen the slot.
Compared with alternatives
- Supabase vs Firebase
Supabase for most startup backends; Firebase for offline-first mobile apps or teams already committed to Google Cloud.
