Why Linear holds the slot

Issue tracking is where engineering time leaks into admin. Linear keeps it small: a Cmd/Ctrl+K command bar, documented keyboard shortcuts, and a native GitHub app on every plan, so issues stay next to the code.

Its free plan caps work, not people: unlimited members, 2 teams, and 250 issues. A founding team can put everyone in one workspace before it pays anything.

What it costs a startup

Free covers unlimited members, 2 teams, and 250 issues. Basic is $10 per user per month, billed yearly, with 5 teams and unlimited issues: $1,200 a year for 10 people. Business is $16 per user per month, billed yearly, and adds unlimited teams, private teams and guests, and Linear Asks. Enterprise is custom and billed annually only.

Startups affiliated with a Linear partner, such as a VC firm or accelerator, can get up to 6 months of Business free if they have fewer than 50 employees. The offer is only for companies not yet paying Linear, so check before you upgrade.

Linear is built for product teams shipping software. It is the wrong fit when:

What would cost Linear the slot

Two things make Linear the default for a founding team: unlimited members on the free plan and the GitHub integration on every plan. If either moved behind a paid tier, or Basic lost features to Business, we would reopen the slot.
