Financial modeling: why our fifth Founder Stack slot is open
Founder Stack · Slot 05 of 5 · Financial Modeling · Open · Reviewed
Short answer: No financial modeling tool we've checked beats a spreadsheet at a price a pre-revenue team should pay, so the slot stays open. Build the model in Google Sheets or Excel until one does.
Why the slot is open
A slot is filled only when the tools already in the stack can't do the job well, and it stays open until a tool earns it. At seed stage, a spreadsheet fed from your accounting exports and the Carta cap table does the job.
The dedicated tools we looked at have either moved up-market or stopped being standalone products.
What happened to Runway and Causal
Two tools we looked at have both changed:
- Runway, the finance tool, now sells as cfo.ai, from Runway Financial, Inc.; runway.com belongs to a different company. cfo.ai's Startup plan is $375 a month billed annually, or $500 monthly, after a 14-day free trial. Growth is $1,125 a month billed annually, or $1,500 monthly.
- Causal is no longer a standalone product: causal.app redirects to Lucanet's extended planning and analysis (xP&A) software.
What a tool needs to earn the slot
To fill the slot, a modeling tool has to beat a spreadsheet on these:
- A free plan, or a price a pre-revenue team can carry.
- Published pricing.
- Direct connections to the accounting system and the bank, so actuals arrive without copy-paste.
- Clean export to a spreadsheet, so the model can go into a data room or leave with the person who built it.
What to use meanwhile
Google Sheets or Excel. Keep the model in one file, pull actuals monthly from your accounting system, and take ownership and dilution from the Carta cap table rather than retyping them.
Facts are checked against each vendor's own pages, listed below; the slot decision is our opinion. Prices change, so confirm on the vendor's site. How slots are won and lost is in the methodology; see also disclosures.
